Laura Hamilton's father was extremely wealthy and he hired three "handlers" to watch over her while she made a trip out west to paint panoramic pictures. She had rheumatic fever when she was younger and it apparently did some damage to her heart. Even though she seemed to have totally recovered and had not had any health issues for several years, her father still thought of her as his invalid daughter so he was very protective of her, hence the "handlers" whose only jobs were to watch over her and keep her safe.

Sam Duncan had fought in the war and he and a friend had been confined at Andersonville Prison for several months. As punishment for an unsuccessful escape attempt, both Sam and Griff were kept in "the hole". This hole was dark and cold and they were fed only sporadically and were seldom given any water to drink. As a result of the months kept in the hole Sam has an almost pathological fear of small, dark spaces.

Sam had received a letter from Griff who seemed to be very excited about his new job working at the Silver Spur Ranch, a highly successful silver mine and then for some reason Sam never heard from him again. When Sam saw in the newspaper that Miss Laura Hamilton is on her way to the Ranch in order to paint the surrounding countryside, he decides to attach himself to her retinue so no one will suspect that he is really there to see if he can find out what happened to Griff.

I would have to agree with the reviewer who said that she thought the ending was too hurried and everything was resolved too quickly. However, I enjoyed seeing how this story unfolded and how the relationship developed between Sam and Laura. I found them to be two of the most likable characters I have read about in quite a while and I really enjoyed this book.

A Wanted Man Susan Kay Law 9780060525194 Books Reviews

Another one that starts out strong, but turns predictable and sappy about half way through. I was actually more interested in the secondary characters than Laura and Sam. The plot felt tired, and the bad guys were flatly two-dimensional.

I'm not sure if this holds true for the paperback, but the kindle version flips point of view without notice throughout the book, very disconcerting. There isn't even space between the last paragraph and the new perspective, making it hard to follow. The new perspective never starts with the person's name, i.e. "Sam thought about that cold, dark cave...," instead you have to wade fairly far into the next paragraph to know who's talking.

The book is not clean, there are a few bad words, and the Lord's name taken in vain at least once. There are intimate scenes, but they pop up in odd places and seem out of character.
This is a great story about Sam Duncan, a hardened, ex-Civil War soldier and hired gun, who plans to use Laura Hamilton to find out what happened to his friend (his jail-mate from Anderson Prison). Laura is an artist who spent years ill in bed with rheumatic fever. Now, her parents have finally allowed her to travel over the West while pursuing her craft. She has three long-time attendants A companion and two bodyguards.

Sam has already tried to discover the whereabouts of his friend, Griff Judah by himself and was almost killed for his efforts. The answer lies on the Silver Spurs Ranch, a spread of thousands of acres, a fence and hordes of killers protecting the property. Now disguised, he plans to act as Laura's assistant while she visits one of her father's business partners (the owner of the Silver Spurs Ranch).

Readers get to learn lots about the two main characters through the slow build-up. Sam is brave, a person who values his friends and deadly with a gun. Laura is very likable; she's a trustworthy helper to her friends and steadfast in a fight. Although they come from shockingly different backgrounds, they meet and recognize the special qualities of the other.

I felt that this book deserved a 5-star-rating until the end. This author can really build tension in a story. I simply couldn't put aside the book, once the pair arrived at the Silver Spurs Ranch. I could hardly stand the tension and the danger they faced.

After getting to know the characters at a leisurely pace, the story moved into high gear at the ranch. The final chapters were just too quick and too neat.
Good
Laura Hamilton has been travelling from town to town on the train while working on her painting. It's a trip that has been hard won as her parents have been overprotective of her since a serious illness happened to her when she was a child. But now she wants to spread her wings even if it's next to impossible with all of her chaperones. Especially Miss Bossidy who has been watching her like a hawk since she met her handsome rescuer Sam. Now being watched even closer can be so suffocating at times. But that doesn't stop her from spending time with Sam although she is hurt at the thought the man is being paid to keep an eye on her. But Sam's presence on the trip is for a very different reason. What is Sam's real reason for being on her trip and what is he really searching for? Will he find the answers he's looking for? This was a pretty entertaining western historical romance novel.
