Against the Wild The Brodies Of Alaska Kat Martin Books

Pleasantly surprised! Now I need more! I really enjoyed this read more than I thought I would. I really expected this to be a girl meets boy, gets trapped in cabin, boy saves girl from killer, and they live happily ever after story. Ok, this is to some extent, but it is so much more! I liked how the back story got interwoven with the main characters so that minor characters were there for critical reasons. I also liked that we got into the head of the killer. I liked his back story and felt so sorry for him that I wished there was some way he could be saved (even if he was deranged).
I did question at the beginning of the book why there was so much going back and forth between the heroine wanting to be with him and fighting her attraction when it was her choice to go to his remote fishing lodge in the Alaskan wilderness. I know, I know... it was covered in the book, they were meant to be together, they couldn't fight true love, etc. But still, if she really didn't want to be there because he made her uncomfortable (in the sense that she had never wanted to jump a man more in her life), then there was an easy solution, but you're there so go on girl! I liked the additions of the dog and the little girl in the story and at one point when we think something has happened, I was so angry with Kat Martin I almost quit reading. But then she of course, threw me another curve ball and I was right back in the book and hanging on until the last word.
Thanks Kat Martin for a great read! I am coming back for more of those Brodie men!

Against the Wild The Brodies Of Alaska Kat Martin Books Reviews

I finished the book and it was pretty good, but not one that I'm really happy I spent my time reading. It quickly moved on through the romance, then became a ghost story then detective/thriller, with the characters rapidly assuming new roles. Part of the reason I ended up disliking it was the inadequate resolution of some of the trust issues - if you're going to spend time building it up, why is it suddenly all okay with no reason?

Hit several spots of confusion due to missing mid-chapter breaks. The version just jumps from one person's thoughts and actions to another, and the discontinuity had me going back to reread at multiple points.
I thought that since this author is a best selling, traditionally published author, that chances were good that she'd do her research on this part of Alaska that I call home, that she set this novel in. It's rare to find a novel set in this area, so (despite the cover, which would have gotten any Alaskan man who struck this pose laughed out of town) I was looking forward to reading this.

Unfortunately, I didn't get far before I realized the author must not have done any but the most superficial research on her setting. She has the main character arrive at Ketchikan International Airport and from there get on a floatplane, which is all possible enough. But her details are completely wrong (staring at the ocean from the dock, the ramp to the dock swaying and bobbing under their feet--it's sturdy enough for vans to drive up and down it). They then get into the plane, a De Havilland Beaver, and proceed to chat to each other for the entire plane ride. This is impossible, as anyone who has ever sat in the cockpit of a Beaver will understand. The noise factor is deafening. Even with a headset (which isn't mentioned) chit-chat is impossible because the mic will pick up the roar of the engine.

Then she describes deep "pine forests." Pine is scarce here, it is mostly hemlock, spruce, and cedar. Then she describes flying over blue mountain lakes. This sounds like she's describing Oregon. In Southeast Alaska the lakes are muskeg, which means they're more likely to be dark brown. In fact, her description of everything sounded more like the Pacific Northwest than Southeast Alaska.

She has the lodge sitting empty for sixty years and needing only minor repairs. Sixty years is deadly to houses made of wood in this extremely damp climate. It would have collapsed without heat in it by the time the hero bought it. She repeatedly mentions the dangers of moose. There are no moose in southern SE Alaska where this takes place. She has the lodge have a huge basement. Most of the land in this area is solid rock under a thin layer of soil. No one has basements, large or otherwise. The hero is able to fly whenever he likes without ever consulting the weather. The weather is king here. It's a tyrant. And planes are constantly held up by high winds, fog, etc., all year long.

Okay, I could go on and on. She got almost every detail wrong, but she got enough right to tell me she did some research...so why didn't she make the effort to get it all right? Or, at least, most of it right? At any rate, all of this could have been forgiven, but what is awful and embarrassing is her depiction of Alaskan Natives. She writes them as if they're something from a Lone Ranger TV episode. The elders speak English without contractions and the Tlingits are described as a matriarchal society, meaning they revered women and held them in high respect. (According to the author.) No. The Tlingits were patriarchal, but they kept track of clans and avoided incest through the maternal line. I'm assuming this is what made the author think they were a matriarchal society.

She has the Tlingit friend wear his hair in braids, with feathers woven into them, wear beads and be an expert woodland tracker (despite having grown up in a city--the same with the hero, who grew up in Anchorage, a typical metropolis). He wears leather workboots--in this wet climate, everyone wears rubber boots. Anything else is deadly. She has this appalling phrase "As drunk as ten Tlingit braves." Besides being racist, Tlingits aren't called braves. Then the superstitious Tlingit elders say things like "Perhaps you have angered the spirits." Native Alaskans are as up-to-date as anyone else in America. This is just embarrassing and racist.

The plot itself is all over the place, the characters aren't very likable (the hero has almost nothing to do with his daughter, though she has special needs and he supposedly loves her--when there's danger, he insists the heroine leave for her own safety, but never mentions getting his daughter out), and here is a sample of her writing style "There was something about him, something that made him seem dark and forbidding, like eating chocolate at midnight." Huh? In addition, "his chest clamped down" half a dozen times.

I really have no idea why this well-published author allowed this book to be published before all the bugs were worked out. This reads like a self published book that is in dire need of an editor, if not book doctor.
I have enjoyed all of Kat Martin's Against romantic suspense series. I've enjoyed some more than others. I usually don't reread these stories but they keep my interest. I liked both the hero and the heroine. Dylan was honorable and had been born in Alaska and knew how to survive on the land. Lane was a kind but savvy businesswoman from LA. I liked the descriptions of Alaska and how Lane came to love the land. The mystery was good and I enjoyed trying to guess what would happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed the supporting characters. The little girl Emily was precious and my heart went out to her when she was trying to recover from tragedy that took her voice away. I also loved Finn! I love pets in stories and he was a great character in the story. I enjoyed meeting Caleb and rooted for his happily ever after too. We also meet Nick, Dylan's burnt out police detective brother, whom I'm sure will get his very own story and happily ever after. I'm looking forward to reading about the other two Brodie brothers. This was interesting and I enjoyed the mystery and suspense. Like another reviewer I do wish the love story had not been based on sex at first but I find it hard to find a contemporary story where love comes before the sex. All in all, good story w some romance and a good mix of mystery and suspense and family and friends in the wonderful state of Alaska.
