This is an excellent "dork meets skater" love story, about all of the things that get in the way of their burgeoning relationship, and how they respond to them. The main characters are very down-to-earth and easily relatable. The drawing is detailed and nuanced, conveying well some of the more subtle aspects of the various characters involved, without beating you over the head with them. The story flows well from scene to scene in a very organic way, and the section transitions are appropriately fit into where the story needs a little pause. Highly recommended, even if you're not a fan of graphic novels and the like.

The Cute Girl Network looks like a modern romance novel, but there’s more to it than just a love story. Jane and Jack meet when she wipes out in front of him in a hipster-stocked town. Jack is something of a clumsy loser, selling soup from a food cart. Jane has recently moved to town, working at a skateboard shop and putting up with stupid guys who think she can’t skate because she’s a girl.

The two slowly grow on each other and start dating (with a great list of cheap things to do, including a visit to a vending machine graveyard). As written by Greg Means and MK Reed, they live in a world of roommates, shared meals, crafts, crazy public art, and energy without enough outlet.

While Jack gets bad advice from his clueless Neanderthal roommate, Jane is taken under the wing of the Network, a group of women who want to prevent “awesome girls” from going out with “total losers”. Harriet introduces Jane to some of Jack’s former dates, all of whom have horrible (but funny to the reader) stories about how much of a dork he was.

Joe Flood’s art is full of background detail, setting up a strong sense of place and lifestyle. His characters are likable in their expressiveness. Jack looks like Shaggy, with an exaggerated nose and chin that reinforces his inadvertent clownishness.

The Network is a neat idea, until you start thinking about it. Even with the best intentions, the women wind up perpetuating the idea that guys can’t improve, when they just need to find the right girl to match and appreciate them. I understand why friends would want to prevent intelligent girls from settling “for less than she deserves”, but the fact is, no one else can determine that for you. There’s a subtle air of jealousy — “why does she see something in him I didn’t?” — and a feeling of dating as an achievement activity, with resentment over time wasted if it doesn’t work out.

Good dating stories at some point give me the feeling “wow, I’m glad I’m happily married”, because for all of the exhilaration of new romance, there’s also a lot of uncertainty and discouragement. This book fits that description, although with plenty of imagination and friendship to get through the rough spots. There’s an air of aimlessness underlying the story, evocative of life today as a young adult until one figures out what matters. THE CUTE GIRL NETWORK is an odd duck. The title comes from the eponymous Cute Girl Network that exists in the city here. If a cute girl has a bad experience with a boy, she's going to tell someone else and then telephone tag the experience throughout the rest of the cute girl network. Which means that, if a cute girl (and I wonder what happens to girls that aren't considered cute) starts going out with someone she thinks is okay, but a different cute girl has had a bad experience with that boy, then the first cute girl gets an intervention so she'll stop seeing the boy.

Yeah. See, maybe it's because I'm a boy, but I actually thought the premise of the story was more than a bit creepy, not to mention unfair. I mean, what if the couple breaks up, but it's because the girl is the root cause? Does the boy still get most of the blame because there's no handsome boy network? The intervention scenes that took place in this book. . . I had the feeling they were supposed to be funny, but I found them to be much creepier than funny.

The thing of it is, I think the creators did as well. The story is about a cute girl who meets a cute boy and starts going out with him. The problem is the cute boy is a bit of a schmoe and has dated -- badly -- several other girls in the network. The network stages a couple of interventions, but the girl decides that she's just going to see the boy anyway, even though he's a schmoe because she's got nothing better to do.

Although the book contains several interesting scenes and some examples of nice dialogue and good artwork, I couldn't get past what I considered to be basic flaws in the narrative and plot. If you can find the book at the library, I'd say go ahead and borrow it. Your mileage will most likely vary from mine.
Great art but I was a bit underwhelmed by the story. I'll bump it up a star because I've met the artist. Is that cool? Shhhhhh.
